LiftMaster Cable & Drum Replacement: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide

A LiftMaster cable and drum replacement in Las Vegas typically runs $130 – $250 installed, depending on whether one side or both sides of your door need new cable and whether the drum itself failed or just wore down. We stock LiftMaster-compatible cables and drums on our trucks, so in most cases we can have your door lifting evenly again the same day you call. Most owners discover this problem the hard way: the door is halfway up, makes a sharp snap, and suddenly one side drops while the other side keeps climbing.

Here’s the thing about LiftMaster setups: they’re built well, but the cable and drum system is called a “wear item” for a reason. Las Vegas is rough on these parts. The dry heat and constant temperature swings between your hot garage and cooler nights cause the steel cables to fatigue faster than they would in, say, San Diego. Add in the fine dust that works its way into the drum grooves over time, and you get a part that works great until it doesn’t. When it doesn’t, it’s almost never a slow decline. It’s a Tuesday morning at 6:45 AM kind of failure.

Which LiftMaster Models This Applies To

If your opener says LiftMaster on it, the cable and drum system underneath is either a Chamberlain-produced assembly or a compatible aftermarket equivalent. That covers the LiftMaster Professional series, Security+ 2.0 models, and the newer belt-driven units paired with standard 7-foot or 8-foot residential doors. The cable drums sit at each end of the torsion tube above your door; they’re what the cables wrap around as the door cycles up and down.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most Vegas homeowners run into: a drum that fits a 7-foot door will not work on an 8-foot door, and vice versa. They look almost identical side by side, but the cable capacity and number of cable grooves are different. We always measure the door height and the drum diameter on-site before pulling parts off the truck. The Model label on your LiftMaster opener (usually on the side of the motor housing near the learn button) tells us the opener type, but the drum size is determined by the door, not the opener. That’s a common mismatch we see when people try to replace just one drum from a random online order.

On OEM versus aftermarket for LiftMaster specifically: the factory drums are cast from the same basic design as aftermarket ones, and quality aftermarket parts from Raynor or Chamberlain suppliers are roughly equivalent in this Las Vegas market. The real decision is cable. LiftMaster OEM cables use a high-tensile aircraft-grade steel wire that’s more consistent under our heat. We stock both OEM and quality equivalents and will tell you the price difference before we install.

One more thing, because “LiftMaster” is a brand name people search and we want to be straight about it: Marlow Garage Door Repair is an independent service provider, not a LiftMaster dealership. We service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie equipment every week, and we stock their cable and drum patterns, but we don’t sell LiftMaster-branded replacement drums as an official dealer. What we install is compatible, reliable, and priced without the brand markup.

Signs Your LiftMaster Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • Frayed cable you can see. Look at the cables running vertically from the bottom of each side of the door up into the drums; if you see little wire wisps curling out or a teardrop-shaped wear spot, the cable has one or two thousand cycles left at most. That’s months in a normal Las Vegas year.
  • Door hangs uneven or jerks to one side. When one cable is carrying more weight because the other has stretched, the door pulls toward the tight side. You’ll see it especially in the first two feet of lifting.
  • Loud pop or snap from the top of the door. That’s a cable that finally broke. We hear this exact story in Summerlin, Henderson, and North Las Vegas every single week. The door usually won’t lift after that, or it half-lifts then slams down.
  • Rust-colored dust or bright metal slivers near the drums. That’s metal fatigue. Grinding from a worn drum groove slowly scrapes the cable coating, leaving fine shavings on the track heads. If you see the shavings, the part is already failing.
  • Door was working fine, now the opener sounds like it’s struggling. A broken or binding cable means the opener is lifting against resistance it wasn’t designed for. The motor runs hotter, sounds labored, and your gear and sprocket kit is the more expensive repair next month if you ignore this for too long. That opener repair is a $120 – $320 job and the cable is $130 – $250; fix the cable first.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Las Vegas, the realistic installed range for a single cable and drum replacement is $130 – $250. If both sides need cables and drums, you’re in the $200 – $250 range. That includes the parts, the labor to set and balance both cables, and our time on-site checking the rest of the torsion assembly for wear. If we find a worn roller or an out-of-alignment track while we’re in there, we’ll quote that separately at $110 – $220 for rollers and $120 – $240 for track realignment.

What drives the range? Two things. First, how many of the four parts actually need replacing; a single cable is the low end, both drums plus both cables is the high end. Second, whether you have a standard torsion setup or an older extension spring system, which takes a different cable and drum pattern. We’ll show you the written price right there in your garage, before any wrench turns. Same-day service is available in most Las Vegas zip codes, but we’ll always quote you the time right then and there, not a “we’ll be there between noon and whenever.” And everything we install, including the cable and drum, is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the fix isn’t right in the first year, we come back and make it right, free.

Part / Service Installed Price (Las Vegas)
Single cable replacement $130 – $180
Single cable plus drum $180 – $220
Both cables, both drums $200 – $250
Roller replacement (add-on) $110 – $220
Track realignment (add-on) $120 – $240

DIY or Call Us?

Let’s be real with each other. You should not replace the cable or the drum yourself. The torsion spring holds hundreds of pounds of tension, and the cable and drum are the components that control where that tension goes. One wrong move with that spring can cause a serious injury or worse; we’ve seen try-it-yourself jobs leave a broken collarbone and a shattered wrist; that’s not a scare tactic, that’s what a garage door spring does when it lets go. This is the part where I tell you to keep your hands in your pockets and call us.

What you can safely do is check the cables visually. Look at the vertical cables running up each side track; if one looks slack or one looks frayed, call us. You can also run the door up and down once or twice while watching the drums. If the cable jumps the groove or stacks unevenly on one side while the other side winds clean, you’ve found the issue and we can fix it. Tell you what’s broken, tell you the price, fix it right, that’s the whole job. For anything past “look at it and report back,” call (725) 373-9798.
